Aeronautics and Jewelry

Ever wanted to fly? As little kids, we fancied the idea of flying so much that we thought if we ran fast enough we'd just take off into the air. We even imagined ourselves floating through the air in front of our house, calling out to our parents. Maybe if we just kicked off the ground a little harder....?

While we never did fly, we still have a soft spot in our hearts for those who got closer than us. Like birds, paper airplanes, and pilots. Now that "flying" (airplane-style) scares us a bit - those takeoffs and landings are rough and turbulence is a constant reminder that planes can crash! - we prefer to keep that soft spot under control. How do we satiate our dreams without heading off into the wild blue yonder, climbing high into the sun? Bling, of course! These adorable Spinning Aviation Earrings ($20) by Designs by Taylor 2U are teeny propellers that actually spin! The earwires are sterling silver, though the propellers are not. But we still love the little beauties...
Love,
Bling!

C'est le Temps de Fete!

Oui Necklace

We think that's roughly French for "It's Party Time!"... roughly. Prismera is a stunning jeweler with beautiful, conceptually-sound collections. The Fete collection uses the bunting image as a charming solution for whimsical necklaces, such as the Oui Necklace ($35 in steel, $50 in gold) above. Though not all feature French words (and custom words are encouraged!), our favorite is still the Joie Necklace - which means "joy" in French.

While we love the Fete collection, we also love most of the things Prismera makes. This necklace feels like clouds and this one is a beautiful interpretation of the onslaught of the elements on nature.
Love,
Bling!
PS - take note that there is a myriad of ways to customize your pieces. Prismera encourages custom orders and offers many pieces in more than one metal and/or with different chain lengths or sizing.

Plaid Reminds Us Of...

Equally lumberjack, punk princess, and prepster! But the fact is, we love plaid... when done correctly. This ring is plaid done up real chic. The Plaid 2 Sterling Silver Ring ($90) by Ball and Chain is a gorgeous, unisex plaid solution. This particular ring is a size 7, but you can get one custom-made in your size as well - however, every ring is completely unique as it's hand-carved only once into wax and then cast using the lost-wax method in sterling silver. We love having something that no.one.else has!
Love,
Bling!
PS - Ball and Chain has been around the block as far as publicity is concerned, and for good reason. Do check out some of their other amazing creations (especially their rings) using the link in their name above.

Button Bling

Kirshenka uses vintage buttons to make a variety of interesting, one of a kind bling - like these Lion and Bull Vintage Button Cufflinks ($15). The lion and bull featured on the face of these cufflinks are fighting, which is typically "awesome" to most men. They'll make the perfect inexpensive gift for your favorite man, plus they'll encourage him to get dressed up which is too sexy...
Love,
Bling!

Thursday

Fringed Bling!

The Nantahala Necklace ($96) by Laurel Wells is just one of the many stunning necklaces with this gorgeous shape at her shop. The fringe is a silken rayon that's been hand-dyed and hand-knotted onto a cotton cord necklace. Beautiful colored feathers are also attached to the necklace. Each necklace is hand-created and thus uniquely beautiful. Check out all the other great necklaces here. We're also really digging the Chilcotin Necklace in Dove ($112) below. It's so delicate and moody.
Love,
Bling!
PS - we found her on Etsy as well, with a larger selection of the same gorgeous, drapey necklaces.

Wednesday

Working Handmade Pinwheel Pendant

This one's pretty phenomenal - a working pinwheel hand-folded from sterling silver and strung on a 21 inch chain. Kimberly Nogueira (aka Florence Girl) creates her whimsical bling in the Virgin Islands, including this Functional Miniature Silver Pinwheel Pendant Necklace ($85). We love bling we can play with, especially when it's made from fine silver (the pinwheel) and sterling silver (the handle) and not overbearing and tacky.
Cool part about buying from Florence Girl? She offers a try-it-on return policy, giving you a week after receipt of your bling to send it back to her! What else? She makes some other origami pieces, including the classic cranes which she mounts on rings, or hangs from earrings and necklaces. There are also these monkeys, but they're less impressive.
Love,
Bling!
PS - standing can add years to your life?? Perhaps... but we still love lounging!

Tuesday

Boho Chic Leather Rings

This Set of 4 Leather Rings ($50) by kjoo is just delightful. We feature rings a lot, because we luuurrve them of course! But we promise each ring we show you is entirely worth the web-space we're giving it, and worth the money you'll spend on it. Like these modern, classy versions of hippie fashion. Yummy. There's a matching bracelet, but we don't like it as much. These little beauties are made from a leather cord and wrapped in gorgeous threads, sized to a 7.5 or 8. Shipping is kinda costly because the artisan is in Portugal, but that comes drastically down when you buy more than one item, so be sure to take a look at the rest of the shop and the sale section.
Love,
Bling!

Monday

Eyelash Bling!

For a long while, performers have been decorating their eyelashes - eyelash bling! First it was just for length, then color, then sparkle.... now maybe the masses are getting in on the action of bling-ifying eyes. We want to join in with a pair of these Eyelash Jewelry With Feathers ($9) by Spirys. Their eyelash jewels are worn on upper or lower lashes quite comfortably and are made to order in any colors. We love the great cost and that they're reusable! Take a look at the how to wear video.
Love,
Bling!

Friday

Lacy Half-Moon Earrings

We love these Sunrise Filigree Earrings ($18) by Brilliance Found because of their awesome shape. Really... how often do you see earrings that run horizontal and close to the ear? Spectacularly different from everything else in your jewelry box, yet still delicate and simple... a perfect fit! They're brass with silver plating, so they're lightweight and nickel-free for you sensitive types.
This Canadian store features a fully stocked shop of stunners, especially the rings. You must go visit to find your new favorite piece of bling.
Love,
Bling!
PS - We can't wait to make this.

Thursday

Scented Bling!

Such a simple idea but so lovely and unique, a Vinaigrette Perfume Locket Necklace ($125) by Erica Weiner Jewelry is a collaboration with DS And Durga Perfumes. The necklace is a reference to the Victorian Vinaigrettes of old - perforated lockets with a scented inside, often smelling salts or vinegar. The piece boasts two custom scented oils that reference hunting and royal samurai women.

Foxhunt is a scent based in country herbs, wildflowers, and patchouli and is said to spell "aristocratic". Empress Jingu is an aroma named for the brave female Japanese Imperial ruler, a samurai who made her sword handle from hinoki wood, allegedly fighting in cypress forests and fields of violets. The actual pendant is laser cut and finished with a gunmetal tone. It hangs on a 25 inch stainless steel change, but features brass findings. We looove that the whole necklace is silver-toned except for those beautiful findings. We think it's quite rad when the clasps and such stand out in a big way.
Love,
Bling!
PS - we do run across some odd bling on occasion. Lots of it is so bad it's just not worth mentioning, but often we find pieces that are just weird enough to be quirky - the perfect fit for that one person who comes along and appreciates it! This oversized Jackalope Ring is one of those pieces.

Wednesday

You're In My Metallic Heart

We adore, lurve, and covet this Brass Anatomical Heart Necklace ($45) by House That Crow Built. The metal heart is hand-cut and hand-stamped with the delightfully witty phrase, "YOU ARE HERE". The piece was inspired by an E. E. Cummings poem (take a look at the product page to read it), which is pretty nifty in our minds. The pendant is large, about two inches tall by an inch and a half wide, and hangs on a sturdy 16" chain. The pendant is oxidized brass and the chain is sterling silver. You can also get the pendant in sterling silver, but we like it much better in gold... it's conceptually fitting. Shipping is low so go ahead and purchase your worries away!
Love,
Bling!
PS - We're enamored by the concept of this website - capturing, remembering, and sharing ideas!

Tuesday

Hardware Ring

Reed Krakoff makes a delectable assortment of bling at reasonable prices for the quality of craftsmanship, materials, and service. These are investment pieces you'll want to wear year after year. This Toggle Ring ($295) is one of our favorite jewels from the shop. It is made with three tones: gunmetal, gold, and rhodium brass plate. We are pretty sure that means it's made from three metals: silver with some surface treatment to give it a blackened color, a low carat gold, and brass plated in rhodium. But it's all a tad iffy... The point is, it's gorgeous and tough at the same time and we think it will make a swift transition to fall so we want it now. Right now. Guess that rent payment will have to wait?
Love,
Bling!
PS - Aside from the bling, Reed Krakoff also has an eye for handbags, shoes, and leather goods... and sunglasses if you're into that sort of thing.

Monday

Necklaces Galore!

When we ran across Valerie Tyler's shop on Etsy, we simply couldn't choose one piece to feature. As you weed through the expected pieces and the ones with flowers and butterflies, you notice that some jewels, especially the necklaces, are spectacular. The Tubular Mixed Metals Necklace ($40) above is so unique and has such great structural aspects that we almost screamed when we saw it. If we took some time, we imagine we could come up with some great conceptual talk about it. Below on the left is the Industria Arch Necklace ($41) that features labradorite under a sterling silver bridge. The colors are so relaxing and dovetail nicely with the current color trends in fashion so it's a very wearable necklace. On the right below is the Blades Necklace ($33). The pendant is brass and the chain is a dark, gunmetal hue.

Don't forget the shipping is under $5 anywhere in the world! Definitely check out the Valerie Tyler Outlet for some really sweet bling that all seems to be under $30.
Love,
Bling!
PS - We like the Here And There Earrings ($18) for a reminder that it hardly matters where we're going... or perhaps that we really don't know where we are.

Friday

Appreciating the Time We Have

Remember Revolt70 (or Marianne Handcrafted Watch Studio) from a while back? Well they got a great feature article on Etsy, so we thought it only appropriate to help amp their sales by re-featuring them alongside the article. This Handcrafted Steampunk Watch ($254) is the perfect reason to do that. With the solemn anniversary of the September 11th attacks of 2001, we are reminded that overall being right on time isn't important. It's more important to appreciate the journey of arriving and the moments you have while you're there. This watch makes the thoughts a reality with it's rough analog time-telling technique that's hidden behind a beautiful door. The beautiful aesthetic structuring of the piece gives us pause to focus on the journey and the moment.
Love,
Bling!
PS - We also really like this brooch that's in their fully (fully fully fully) stocked shop.

Bridging The Autumn Gap

Sadly, we are bidding a fond farewell to summertime delights. But in doing so, we are welcoming a pretty rad fall. It's our personal favorite season here at Bling of the Day. We think this necklace makes both a conceptual statement about the bridge to fall, but also makes complete fashion sense as we transition to chilly days, colorful leaves, and the daily use of our favorite cardigans. The Verdigris Honey Bee ($18) by La Cage Doree is an inexpensive, but high-quality solution to a "what do I wear" day during September. Well, you may be in the nuddy but at least you'll be bejeweled! Take it from us and slip this on as a reminder of spring and summer (the bee, of course!) while still appearing to fully embrace the onslaught of wind and the mournful storage of your flip flops (the color and heavy material).
Love,
Bling!
PS - and with fall comes football season.... we're not really fans, don't even know how the game is played, but we do think this is neato.

Wednesday

A Bright Return

We are returning from a great Labor Day vacation tonight (to see our newly engaged friend we've known since kindergarten and reminisce with our mothers and her family). It was lovely and relaxing but now we feel we owe you some really stellar pieces for the rest of the week! This Bright Argyle Bangle ($40) by Neivz Jewelry on Kembrel is on sale through Saturday as just that, a totally stellar piece of bling. You can find some nifty jewels in your price range for sure (as low as $13!!) in the sale. This particular piece has a cool take on a classic print and features some slammin' colors we can no longer live without.
The bracelet ships just 3 days after purchase, a record for sample sales, and you can return it! The best part about this sample sale website geared toward college students is that you don't have to have an invite! So sign up here for free and without hassle tonight to get your unobtrusive dose of Kembrel style.
Love,
Bling!

Friday

Crystal Sculptural Ring

What's truly unique about the Mixed Crystal Keyhole Ring ($120) by elseetee2 is the interesting shape of its band. It's vaguely representative of a keyhole, as indicated by the name, but it makes such gentle curves from the shape that you no longer recognize it as a keyhole. It also raises the stones a little higher off the finger, giving them more prominence. The placement and multiple heights of the stones creates interest like we've never seen in a professionally-set ring.
Let's talk materials. The band and setting are sterling silver, while the stones are amethyst and quartz. They are held in place, rather than by the setting, by a pool of violet-tinged resin. In the process of creating this stunning, one of a kind ring, the artist used gold dust, hand forged the band shape, finished the band with an almost faceted feature, hand-polished the ring, and used a tumbler to polish it further.
The ring fits a sizes 9-10 but can be made slightly larger or slightly smaller, but if you still don't fit the size range the artist loves custom orders! This mother of three small children who teaches high school art majored in sculpture, which is why her pieces are so structural and appear interesting from every angle. Check out the whole shop here!
Love,
Bling!

SALE Alert: Gilt Groupe's Jewelry Final Sale

Adina Reyter - Small gold flower ring

Gilt Groupe's Jewelry Final Sale is going on right now and doesn't end until Monday!! While it's already been picked through a fair amount, there are still some slamming deals to be found - like this Adina Reyter ring just $78, down from $200! Or the gorgey Sur Evolution Drift Wood Earrings marked down from $118 to only $35 bucks! We love Gilt, though it tends to me on the pricey side. That's why these great "final" sales are our little way of getting in on the high-end action. Plenty of celebrities enjoy frequent Gilt-less sprees and now we can too. Gemma Redux's Fanny Necklace ($98, below) is quite the stunner too...
Love,
Bling!
PS - Not a member of this invite-only sample sale website? We've got you covered.

Hittin' the Rails

We love unexpected bling. This railroad spike ring ($65) by Giles & Brother is wholly unexpected. We love its imperfections and we love its shape. The juxtaposition of the round end and the sharp end is stunning. It comes in brass and sterling silver, sizes 5-10. With the gorgeous design of the website, we know you'll want to see more of their jewels...
Love,
Bling!
PS - These edible crayons could become the next big thing in five-year-old culture.
